When my professor described this time period as "the social and spiritual schizophrenia of the world" I didn't understand what he meant. But after reading this, wow was he right.
So much happened during the Victorian era, worldviews and philosophies and confusion were all over the place. This was remarkably well-written and informative.
Derek Jarrett charts a path from the Victorian age into modern times, showing the loss of a certainty about the future, which was hammered home in the trenches of World War One. It is an overview of social hisotry that touches upon aspects of the loss of Christian faith, coming to grips with modernity, and forays into the imagination of the fantastic. A very interesting book that covers loss, despair, and a resurgence of the divine. Some fascinating elements here. For those interested in history and how societies change, this book will give great insight.
