Clayton Hartley Matthews was born in 24 October 1918. He started to write short stories in late 1950s, and then coming up with paperback novels, mostly in the erotic genre, in the early 1960s as Clayton Matthews. In a California's local writers' group, he met the gothic writer Patty Brisco. After his divorce, In 3 November 1972, he married Patty, and they lived near San Diego, California. His wife, became the popular romance writer Patricia Matthews, and he also started writing romance novels. He often collaborated with his wife, first with three romance novels and later with the Casey Farrell Mysteries, a suspense series with 5 books, they were called "the hottest couple in paperbacks". Clayton passed away in 25 March 2004
