I found this book very interesting, because I knew Isa Vermehren when I taught for a year at the Sophie-Barat-Schule in Hamburg very many years ago. There were whispers about her career as a night-club singer, but nothing about her time in concentration camps - I only picked up on that when I read a bi0graphy of Kim Philby in which her brother Erich Vermehren was mentioned. Now of course I wish that I had got to know her better - multi-faceted, multi-talented, a complex mix of joie de vivre and strict traditionalism, an amazing woman indeed.
