A monograph detailing the French effort to claim and militarily occupy the Ohio River starting with the Pennsylvania tributaries in 1753-54. The account is drawn largely from French documents. The opening year of the campaign was frustrated by disease, drought, and opposition by some of the local tribes. The effort was also opposed by the Virginia colonial governor, his message to the French delivered by a twenty-one year-old George Washington. The account also describes the first armed encounter that resulted in the death of a French diplomat, Jumonville, near present Uniontown.,Pa. : Washington was present there. The subsequent of Fort Necessity on July 4th, 1754 is also addressed.

The publication includes a detailed chronology, maps, and additional illustrations.
