Paper Peek

Paper Peek: Alphabet: 1

Learning the alphabet is a lot more fun with clever die-cuts and kaleidoscopic artwork.

Peek through an ant-shaped opening to see an intricate pattern made of colorful objects, animals, and graphic shapes. Turn the page, and the letters ABC emerge, as the pattern expands to include many more components. Can you find one armadillo hidden among them? Two bicycles? Three camels? With an equally jam-packed spread for every three letters of the alphabet, this stylish search-and-find concept book promises hours of mesmerizing activity for young children.

The author/illustrator of this board book is Chihiro Takeuchi, a paper cut artist, who resides in Japan. My introduction to her work was through the title
Whose Bones Were Those which was a masterful title for children on skeletons. This title however, has pluses and minuses. The boards that a child looks at to discover objects are creatively illustrated with a multitude of objects that of a child’s world animals and objects. On the preceding page asking the child to find find five different objects, ranging from one to five in number. One armadillo, two bicycles, three camels, four alligators , and five bunches of bananas.
All of these objects are interspersed with other objects and abcs. Naturally the board book is stamped for ages 0 to 3. Personally I think the age group will be frustrated with the task and I am not sure some in the age group will have the visual discrimination to locate the objects. This is Where’s Waldo for toddlers. My three star rating is for the overall graphic design with its due cuts and coordinating the objects to find with the alphabet.

I thought this was really cute. There are a lot of alphabet books out there. This added interest with cutout shapes showcasing featured letters, then a "spot it" type challenge, to seek and find images associated with the highlighted letters of the alphabet. This is going into the LFL, but if it doesn't get snagged, it's one I think I'll put in our personal library.

Wonderful alphabet full of pictures that match different letters. So many levels of fun and activities for young readers! I love the final spread where one can sing the alphabet song IF one looks close enough!

Theo: I like looking for pictures but I’m just not good at looking for rockets.
Me: I’ll find all the rockets then.
Theo: you’re not good at finding them either.
