Damien Owens was born in Monaghan, Ireland, in 1971. He is the author of six novels: Dead Cat Bounce (2001), Peter and Mary Have a Row (2002), The Bright Side (2008), Little Black Everything (2009), Married to a Cave Man (2018), and Duffy and Son (2022).
The Bright Side and Little Black Everything were published under the name Alex Coleman.
He also created and wrote Trivia, a TV comedy/drama, two series of which were broadcast by RTE (Ireland) in 2011 and 2012.
Tripe about a variety of people who do nothing, say nothing sensible and have arguments over anything at all, including particle physics. Or a boy arguing with a priest in class about how many people know or follow the rules of the religion. In neither case is there a point. The language is bad and the writing reflects this. I think the author may be trying to channel Roddy Doyle with added computer repairs (a lady had kicked the plug loose in the socket) but there are too many characters being followed and in consequence nothing can happen. Set in Ireland, normally I would add a star for that but it doesn't give a good impression of Ireland.
After the last epic, I need something quick and easy and funny.
Having enjoyed Dead Cat Bounce, I give this a go and it doesnt disappoint.
Peter and Mary have been with each other since early school days.
There are lots of misunderstandings, which involve Peter going out and getting drunk and getting a local piss head interested in his life story and trying to catch his wife out.
Then there is a nephew of the couple who thinks they are splitting up and a business trip to Dublin where an old university chum half trys it on.
Eventually the whole thing descends into farce but the story is just a vehicle for this amusing writer to deliver his set pieces and quips.
