This is a book that delivers much deeper into moral character and character development than nearly any book I’ve ever read. As the story develops, so does your attachment to our disgust for particular characters, but the key to that attachment lies with your own personal similarity to our difference from each character. Are you one who has an unbeatable moral code, that tends to side with truth, goodness, and mercy and that believes in forgiveness at any cost? Then you may develop an affinity for Jacob Allen Brady, the agonist of the story.
If you aren’t sure about how you feel about certain moral standards or codes, but wish to investigate, you may begin to love the story’s narrator, a young boy named Ben, the estranged son of Jacob Brady.
The story is a fictional novel based in a largely factual setting during the civil war. It’s contents are sure to engage readers of any age.
I read this book to my children as a bedtime story for several weeks. It was most enjoyable to see their varying reactions to each character and situation, and the emotions which each had as they listened to the novel unfold.

A book about families split apart after the US civil war where neighbors fought on opposite sides. A story about not judging and forgiveness. An interesting look at a part of the war that is talked about, but this brings it into focus.
