A trip down memory lane. In my younger years, Bruce Hutchinson was one of the foremost political journalists in Canada, and this book demonstrates that he was a talented wordsmith and thoughtful observer. He was born in the first year of the twentieth century, grew up in Victoria and had a career that took him to the halls of power in Ottawa and Washington from the 1930s into the 1970s, so he was witness to decades of change and had conversations with many Canadian prime ministers and friendships with powerful people in Washington. It’s fascinating reading on that level, and also interesting in terms of the role the newspapers like the Winnipeg Free Press used to play.
