As they roam around their woodland home, a mother and baby squirrel observe, ask questions and comment on the amazing life cycle of a century-old oak tree. This book features sequence of events from acorn, through to sapling and on to fully grown tree.
(Claudia) A little squirrel and his mother talk about acorns and oak trees (in conversation bubbles), while curving lines of black text narrate the life cycle of an oak tree in simple, straightforward statements. The illustrations of the anthropomorphic squirrels don’t have a lot of character, but the scenes vary enough to sustain interest in the story, and extra characters – a hedgehog, birds, deer, colorful insects – provide additional interest and some mild humor. (Booklist) “Titles in the First Look--Science series offer very simplified versions of their subjects … soothingly colored cartoon-style illustrations … add a lighthearted element.”
(SLJ) “While the story lines [of books in the First Look—Science series] may interest children, they are slight, as is the information.”
