Parts of the book are very good, others not so much. It is interesting to read Hutchison's observations (made in the mid-1980s) in the light of knowledge of events in the past 35 years. Years and events that were future and unknown to him. I did appreciate and benefit from many of his insights about the nature of politics and politicians. We perhaps expect too much from them and judge them by unreasonable standards. I don't share his optimism about the objectivity of the news media. I most enjoyed his recounting of the strengths, weaknesses, achievements, and failures of Canada's Prime Ministers from MacDonald to Mulroney. I thought he was fair in his treatment of them regardless of their political party. It was an enjoyable and profitable read.
