The most important thing is how you see yourself. Even the smallest cat sometimes feels as brave and wild as his big cat cousins.Dana Kubick has beautifully illustrated Tabby and his early morning walk on the wild side.
Tabby is normally a quiet well behaved little tabby cat but he occasionally has delusions of grandeur when he feels as brave and wild as his big cat cousins.
One morning he looks in the mirror and instead of seeing an image of himself, he sees an image of one of the big cats. This has quite possibly come about because every night Tabby dreams of hot sultry nights, sleeping under the moon and stars and he pictures himself stretched across a tree branch as a leopard.
So that morning when he exits through his cat flap, he imagines himself going out to patrol his territory and walking in the tall grass and Dana Kubick's clever juxtaposition of images (which continues throughout the book) shows admirably the contrasting effect of Tabby's thoughts.
He climbs to the top of the garden ... and as a big cat surveys his kingdom, when he is thirsty he drinks from the garden pond or as his alter ego, from majestic lakes and looking at a bird in a tree, he stalks his prey with silent steps. He pounces, the bird flies away and both he and his big cat image are surprised!
But unlike his big cat, Tabby knows that when he gets hungry he can quickly go back through the cat flap where someone is there to look after him; his big cat image simply looks bemused at Tabby's disappearance. And Tabby finishes his day cuddling up in the arms of his owner in a comfortable armchair ... his walk on the wild side over and done with!
Dana Kubick's divine illustrations make the book a delightful one to read, view and own.
