ダヤンとジタン

   わちふぃーるどは動物たちが仲良く暮らす星。タシルシティで暮らす猫のダヤンは無邪気でおっちょこちょい。すてきな青い帽子をかぶった枯れ木のロークは門番としてダヤンに雇われている。2人はアルス（地球）から届いたリーマちゃんの手紙を読んでもらうため、謎に満ちた賢い猫のジタンを探しに旅に出た。しかし、千の目を持つ大蛇バジリスクはダヤンの金色の目を奪おうとしており、また死の森の魔王はジタンの知る「命の泉」の秘密を探ろうとタシルを狙っているのだった。そしてリーマちゃんがダヤンあてに書いた手紙には…。

   タイトルは『ダヤンとジタン』だが、物語中盤まではダヤンと門番ロークが主役である。お気に入りの帽子を取られたロークが「何よりったって、たかが帽子です。そりゃ友達の方が大事ですよ」といえば、ダヤンは「きみに体温がないなんてとんでもない。だってすごくあったかいよ」とロークを思いやる。この物語は、困難な旅の中で勇気を失わずにいられるのは、温かい友情があるからだということを示しているのだ。

   また、街のみんなで協力して魔法でアルスの危機を救ったり悪者をやっつけるのはありがちな設定だが、宙に浮くことのできる不思議な湖や、マージョリーノエルというサーカス団の不思議な仲間たちなどキャラクターが細かく描写されていて飽きることがない。

   友情と勇気を題材にしたこの物語は、繊細なエッチングの挿絵の魅力と共に、小学生から大人まで就寝前のひと時を過ごす本としておすすめ。（青山浩子）

Since my previous exposure to "Wachifield" was just that I enjoyed the branded goods with Dayan and other characters on them, I was pleasantly surprised by how interesting I found this volume (actually the second in the series). It has a fairy-tale quality, and reads much like a children's book - but without the helpful furigana. ;)

Very basic storyline: Dayan receives an important letter from Rima, his prior owner on the human-world, but he can't read human writing. He needs his friend Jitan to read the letter for him, but Jitan has disappeared on one of his mysterious journeys. Dayan heads off in search of Jitan, running into adventures and making new friends along the way. Until he runs into the Demon King and his basilisk, who are also in search of Jitan...
