Larry Cole #10
Revenge
A brutally-wronged girl now a woman grown - cold, clever, calculating - mistakenly presumed dead. A macabre magician with a secret past, stalked by an exotic and enigmatic assassin. A woman with breathtaking beauty and an insidious scheme that is as vicious as she herself is vindictive. An ex-pro-lineman turned savage gangster . . . a threat to everyone with his all-consuming greed. A young, ambitious cop drawn to a wealthy but willful woman . . . a woman as wily as she is wild. His father, legendary Chicago cop, Larry Cole, must stop them all, particularly the deviously deadly femme fatale. Beautiful as she is bloody, relentlessly obsessed, bent on vile, violent . . . revenge.

This was published a number of years after Holton's death, and wow, it was SO clear that someone other than Hugh Holton finished this book. I suspected as much the moment I saw that an "and" instead of a "/" had been placed between Detective Judy Daniels' moniker. And whoever finished it was clearly NOT a Chicagoan - references to the subway and midtown as well as a "fight-end" makes me think it was a New Yorker with no sports knowledge. The pacing was off and the end was not wrapped up well at all. I wanted to read this because I wanted to read all of Holton's books. Such a shame that he died at such a young age. I don't recommend this one, and can only imagine how different it would have been had he lived to finish it himself.

The final Deputy Chief Larry Cole novel before the passing of writer Hugh Holton.

After seeing Butch receive that completely unnecessary tongue-lashing from Morgana, I'm beginning to wonder if he should've just gone with Susanne. Poor emasculated fool.
Is this some kind of unwritten rule for books with romantic plots in them? That the girl is always supposed to get royally pissed of at her man at some point? Even for something far beyond his control?
*sigh* Geez, this is such a crock.
I'm sorry Hugh Holton is dead, though. What a pity I should be introduced to this author through his final work.

This, apparently final, novel from Hugh Holton is an excellent follow through to the others. His plots and characters are well developed and hold the readers interest. I occasionally wonder how much of what he wrote was fictionalized autobiography... or maybe he just projected more evil or sociopathy to some of the characters he met through his career as a police officer. His Chicago descriptions are all spot on. A good read.

This book was completed, by another author, some time after Hugh Holton's death. It was a little uneven, and the ending seemed somewhat abrupt, but overall, it was pretty true to Holton's original style. I'm not sure how much of the manuscript was completed, but it took several years before it was published.

Starts out sort of okay as far as pulp fiction. But then weirdness appears multiple times about not recognizing people.
And finally, the ending. The ending is, well... the ending is that rare vintage where I was actually embarrassed for the author while reading it. That doesn't happen too often. And I blast thru a moderate number of pulp bestsellers.
Don't read this book.

long mystery novel. end of a series of books for Larry B. (Butcher) Cole. Fast read, but too detailed sometimes about the police technicalities for the average reader. ok read.
