Shep - Forever Faithful
Between the gray twilight of the Great Depression and the perilous dawn of World War II, from 1936 to 1942, a heartwarming story of extraordinary loyalty quietly unfolded along the Great Northern Railroad in the remote little prairie town of historic Fort Benton, the birthplace of Montana. A story of faithfulness so unbelievable it warmed the world's heart as it was recorded in the pages of Ripley's Believe It Or Not. This is the story of Shep, the once vagrant mongrel who became America's most legendary dog. Strong principles and simple virtues, taught by a long-departed master, were exemplified by the life of his loyal dog while keeping a five-year lonely vigil for the master's return. Shep's amazing story now belongs to the ages, a classic piece of American history told and retold throughout the years by the Associated Press, UPI, Reader's Digest, Paul Harvey, and other major publications. A story of a noble dog, a soul; forever faithful; and an undying love for his master that endured the hardships of mortal existence and never wavered. A story told through the eyes of a young family struggling against personal misfortune, and the adversity of hard times in an unfamiliar town, a town of a last frontier.

Our neighbor's relative wrote this book and he loaned it to us to read. Quite a story about Shep who's sheepherder master died and was shipped from Montana to South Dakota to family and Shep wasn't allowed on the train to go with him. But Shep waited at the train station for 5 1/2 years checking each train that came in from the East, waiting for his master to come back. They worked together for 9 years before Joe died and Shep never gave up. This tells of other people he helped while always faithful in waiting for the next train. There is a big statue of Shep in Fort Benton, Montana, and the story went all across the US during the war. He died in January 1942. A very nice book.

This impressive story is the heartwarming and inspiring legend about Shep, an amazing dog who is unusually faithful and loyal; and a special family and one man's struggle for redemption.
My parents gave each of their children the Commemorative Edition, autographed with a personal message from the author who was my Father’s dearest and closest friend for sixty eight years. I so wish that my Dad would have been well enough to read and appreciate this wonderful book before he passed away, he would have loved the story and been so proud of Stewart.

I loved this book, I love dogs for one thing and the story was touching. It is a keeper.
About a dog that lost his owner (sheep hearder) and is alone, ends up saving a little girl and they become best friends, it is a true story, very good.
