The DK publishing house has a stadium full of different non-fiction books for all ages and a variety of interests. This book, Twisters, comes in several forms for different levels of reading competence.
My eight-year-old and I got the “Level 3” version and she had no trouble reading the whole book (about 30 pages) to me. (The only phrase she had trouble with was “Enhanced Fujita Scale.”
The book began with a personal story of an encounter with a “twister.” It then brought in a lot of factual information about how tornados develop and the different forms they can take. We learned about the different classes of tornados and the type of damage they were capable of.
There were a lot of interesting facts about how tornados could carry things many miles and some stories about how somethings just got moved without any damage….including a baby!
Entertaining and educational---a good introduction to the subject and to weather in general.
