Harriet Ziefert grew up in North Bergen, New Jersey, where she attended the local schools. She graduated from Smith College, then received a Masters degree in Education from New York University.

For many years, Ziefert was an elementary school teacher. She taught most grades from kindergarten to fifth grade. "I liked it," she said, but she stopped teaching when she had her own sons. When her children were older, Ziefert wanted "a bigger arena" for her work. She went to work at a publishing company, Scholastic in New York City, developing materials for teacher's guides for kindergarten language arts and social studies programs.

"About twelve years ago," says Ziefert in a 1995 interview, "I tried to get a job as an editor, but no one would hire me as a trade editor. So I decided to write my own books." Since then, she has written several hundred books, mostly picture books and easy-to-read books. "I write books very quickly," she says, "in about twelve hours. I rewrite them three times over three days, and then they're done." She writes about twenty books a year.

Nicky's Picnic”, 1986, is one of two children's books from a book stash discovery. Some of the loveliest stories I've read were children's. I keep some and others go to my niece and nephew. This one comprises easy, short phrases about a kitten meeting his Mother at a picnic. He strolls through changing terrain and meets a variety of critters, some keen to join him for this quaint, festive repast.

He and his Mother are grey tabbies, one type that is special to me. Neither of their Moms were tabbies but Nicky's is adorably identical to him, in full-grown size. His eyes are black points whereas she has eye-catching, blazing, gold eyes, that impressively exude love and wisdom. One wonders if Richard Brown's interpretation is that gold eyes will be grown into and that kittens begin with little points. The drawings are cartoonish but brightly, lushly, invitingly colourful and expressive on very happy, pretty faces. All the animals and their terrains are rendered recognizably and beautifully. Richard is in Cambridge, England.

The authoress is from New Jersey, USA; a teacher who switched to a publishing company after she had her sons. When Harriet Ziefert could not become an editor, she got the idea to compose literature of her own and she has in abundance. Teaching children stuck with her new roster as an authoress and Nicky features in a few other books. I thought to give three stars to such simplistic text. The lines are geared to introduce each picture hidden in the pages, rather than build a story. However this “Life The Flap” feature creates anticipation and fun that I graded higher. The loving Mother trusting her kitten to meet her is the most precious aspect, along with the peaceful thought of the goose, rabbit, and mouse joining them.
