Death. It’s what happens at the end of your life. Unless you’re Jonathan Taylor. Haunted by a premonition of his imminent death, Jonathan Taylor takes his family on a journey halfway around the world to chase a life he saw in a dream, only to discover it’s a life he’s lived before. When unexplained artifacts, all bearing a single mysterious word, start showing up in gravesites thousands of miles apart, a prominent New York City professor of archaeology becomes obsessed with solving their mystery. Is it an ancient curse? A warning? Or a promise of everlasting life?
Two strangers searching for an answer to the same impossible question will leave you is reincarnation possible? And, have I lived and died before? What will you be remembered for? How will you leave your mark?
Feeling propelled by a force he cannot articulate, Jonathan knows he must leave New York and head for India at once. After insisting the trip could mean life or death, his adult children acquiesce. Jonathan, a successful architect, feels it in his bones—he lived and then perished in India in a past life. He starts speaking in another language and reliving deaths from his previous lives, including being run over by a train and drowning. The memories are foggy and scattered, but the one thing they have in common is a small stone with a cryptic inscription.
In another part of the world, Howard, an archeologist, unearths the decaying body of an infamous man. Despite the collective excitement of his archeological team, it is not the body that intrigues Howard. Tightly clenched between his lifeless hands, a stone is etched with a foreign script.
Is the inscription the same on both stones? And what does it all mean? Read the book to find out!
“Leave a Mark” by Gary MacKnight was a thrilling journey from beginning to end. I’ve never read anything like it! Jonathan’s urgency for unearthing the truth about his vivid dreams was captivating. It wasn’t a matter of choice; he had to find answers, even if it meant traveling thousands of miles and everyone thinking he was crazy. In addition, the novel had me measuring the likelihood of reincarnation. I’d always scoffed at the idea of proclaiming someone is an old soul, but after reading this book, it’s fathomable. Is it possible to recall events from one’s previous life? I will probably never know, but it’s intriguing to ponder.
The book is told from the third person perspective, primarily following Jonathan and Howard, but occasionally shifts back in time to other characters. The author provided sufficient backstories, each one revisiting the elusive artifact, which provided another piece of the puzzle. The absolute best thing about the novel was the ever-changing landscape. With Jonathan searching for answers, I marveled at traversing all over the globe with him. Visiting a small town in India, traveling the mountains and caves in Australia, exploring Paris, and so much more—the story never disappointed and kept me furiously devouring the pages.
“Leave a Mark” is an incredible adventure story that brings the reader along on a quest to uncover the protagonist’s ancient roots. The writing is sprinkled with spirituality and will appeal to readers who feel compelled to ask those existential questions—where do we come from, and is there life after death?

This book was terrific. Every place Johnathan went with his family I felt I was with them. The story line was so well written . I can’t wait to read Gary’s next book
