Van Keulen's books are sure different from other authors I have read!
What a 'dark' story! Should we read this as sort of imaginary fantasy?
The book seems to be read a lot by middelbare pupils for their 'list'. Seen with a bit of fantasy that could be understandable.
The first part of the book confused me sometimes, just one short incident after another of young children playing games, taunting each other, playing tricks on each other, gossiping with each other, talking about things they might do [often unrealistic]. I got a bit bored, not seeing the connection, not seeing where this was all leading.
I guess the author wants us to see the life of more or less ordinary children, in this case girl age 11 and her younger [I think] sister, establishing with the anecdotes their more or less ordinary ways of playing and interacting with each other.
Though you find yourself often asking, IS this normal/average? Isn't this meaner than supposed friends treat each other? So I guess that sets the stage for what happens later.
But I imagine Van Keulen wants us to see that an 'innocent' child in a reasonable home environment can have some unacceptable ideas/actions.
Very interesting on family relations, especially how a divorced mother with children copes with trying to date and have a relationship with a boyfriend. Not easy.
goodreaders very mixed on this. Many didn't like it.
"Ze zegt het nergens, maar waarschijnlijk moet je het situeren in de 60er of 70er jaren, ook gezien de nonnen waar de hoofdpersoon les van had"
"vol jeugdherinneringen aan een 'mindere wijk' (flats, drank, 'vreugdevuren' van gejatte kerstbomen) in de tijd van de ontkerkelijking"
I guess Van Keulen grew up in the 1960s so it makes sense.
