This book focuses on the basics of sailing a small boat. Those looking for modern innovations in sailing might be disappointed.
This charming and engaging book artfully describes what's involved in sailing, explaining terminology along the way. Modern sailors might be looking for something discussing electronic bells and whistles such as depth sounders, power winches, fiberglass repairs, or mounting of solar panels. Obviously, those types of topics will not be found in a book written in the 19th century.
This book covers timeless basics for the small sailboat sailor and what it's like to be out on a day sail, while familiarizing the reader with nautical terms and concepts. Given its continuing applicability for learning the basics of sailing today, it serves its purpose well.
I liked this because it shows much of sailing has not changed, including the language. But it was a little difficult to read because of the author's voice - that being one who spoke in the manner of his time around the turn of the century. Of course, that also contributed to its charm.
