Governor Holden was posthumously pardoned by the NC Senate in 2011. He remains the only governor in state history to be impeached and removed from office. His removal was the result of his suppression of Klan terrorist activities in multiple counties. His removal was entirely partisan in nature and marked the beginning of the long, dark night of white supremacist reaction against reconstruction. In his memoir he is humble, defiant, and without bitterness. North Carolina should be tearing down its Confederate statues in favor of statues of him. His description of the tyranny of the Confederate gov't is simple and damning. Here we are in 2017 witnessing the resurgence of the Klan, NC gov't policies to protect Confederate monuments, racist gerrymandering, and a federal executive that's ignorant of history and decency. This has to end.
