Malcolm and Dandy may only be 10-year-old boys, but they've already experienced something most adults never do--a ghost! Malcolm's Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enhanced Specter Detector did its job at the McBleaky house. Malcolm is hoping his next gadget, the Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enchanced Ghost Zapper, will work on the ghost haunting the Millers' house! I'm the author of literally (get it) dozens of books for children.
Born in Killeen, Texas on a cold January day in 1954. My family moved around a lot, allowing me to, over the years, live on a farm, in an historic home and always near rivers or bayous. My playthings were hula-hoops, old typewriters and a wooden leg named Charlie. (Yep, you read that right.) If you want a true glimpse of my childhood dreams, read my novel, Man in the Moon. The character Janine allows you inside my young mixed-up mind.
I’ve lived most of my life in Houston and still live there today. You’ll find me here reading, writing and smiling.
This is is the second book in what I just found out is a series of 20 chapterbooks. Malcom and Dandy, after their experience at the McBleaky house, decide to test out a second product they receive from the same mail and order catalog that the Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enhanced Spector Detector came from. The second product is called an Ecto-Handheld-Automatic-Heat-Sensitive-Laser-Enhanced Ghost Zapper. Naturally, they want to test it out before taking it back to the McBleaky house.
Malcolm was asked to watch the two dogs that the Miller's just up the street have. At first, it's something of an inconvenience to have to go make sure the dogs are fed because he wanted to figure out where he could test out the Zapper (I'm not retyping the entire name of it lol), but then it becomes a thing of luck. He sees a transparent figure walking around in the kitchen. Jackpot! This gives Malcolm and his hesitant friend Dandy just the chance they are looking for.
Dandy is a little less "germy" in this book, but he still picks his nose about twice. His new gross habit is to pick his ears with his pointer finger. I'm not sure which gender Dandy will find out he likes in a few years (they're about 10 years old rn; I think), but that's a habit he will need to grow out of to attract... heck, ANYONE. Just like in my review of book one, I digress.
Their new mission is to get to the bottom of the Miller haunting and test out their ghost zapper. I will say that I'm a little disappointed with the lack of a certain reveal. I think Enderle was probably going for that "it was irrelevant" idea, but this idea never works. It's kind of like J.K. Rowling claiming that Dumbledore was gay and that he had to choose between the man he loved (Grindelwald) and the world he loved (magical world), but refusing to actually prove it by putting it into the very movie that it should've been in (The Crimes of Grindelwald) and thereby revealing the lie. *shrugs*
Anyway, I will give this one 3 stars much like the first one. I had planned on giving it four, but with the lack of a certain reveal, it loses that extra star.
80 pages. Great cover art will entice a reader to try this one. Plot moves quickly as the two friends continue to look for more ghosts and use a new gadget to neutralize one they encounter while dog-sitting at a neighbor's house. Boys will especially love this series. Recommended for Gr. 3-5.
Malcolm and Dandy are two best friends that are taking care of the Miller dogs Brom and Bower. Malcolm discovers weird man by the refrigerater and he said I’m Gonna Get You. Dandy and Malcolm ran home to call the police. The police came and they went into the house but no one was there. So the police leave thinking that they are playing tricks them. Malcolm detector started to go off beeeeeeeeeeeeee beeeeeeeeeeeeee really fast that means that there was a ghost in the house. So Dandy and Malcolm go on a ghost hunt in the Miller house. At the End Dandy threw his goggles at the ghost but the ghost throw the goggles back at Dandy and it hit him in the head. Malcolm grabbed the ghost zapper and zapped the ghost. ~Lexi~
The characters are fun to read aloud. Sure, they are all stereotypes, but the story is still fun: a pretty good mix of suspense and humor. There's nothing too deep here, but I liked this book more than the first one.
