It is 1840 and Jamie Fenton has accompanied his father, who has emigrated as a ship's doctor, to Sydney. Soon after their arrival their ship is highjacked by pirates and taken to New Zealand where they escape by swimming ashore. After many adventures Jamie's father decides to stay and partner with Dr Mac.
This novel effectively captures the atmosphere of Sydney in the 1840s and of the early New Zealand settlements.
Evelyn Mary Sutton (née Breakell) (14 September 1906 to 19 December 1992), commonly known as Eve Sutton, was a New Zealand writer of literature for children.
This is another book from my childhood courtesy of Scholastic books. Surgeon's Boy is about a boy on his way to colonial Australia to start a new life with his dad Unfortunately, upon their arrival they are kidnapped by pirates desperate to escape their convict life. Eventually they are able to escape, and amidst a variety of adventures, find freedom in New Zealand. I loved this tale of early Australia when I was young. I don't know if it's still around, but I hope so as I'm sure it would be as exciting to kids today as it was to me 25 years ago.
