This review is of “Awake, Savage Heart” by Sonya T. Pelton.

The book begins in Minnesota, 1867. It is here that Tammi Andersen, the heroine of the book, lives with her brother, Mikki. (Tammi and Mikki’s parents passed earlier). One day, Tammi, while driving her sleigh, nearly runs over Daniel Tarrant, the hero of the book, who works in a logging camp.

Fast forward two years. Mikki is dead, Tammi is married to a brutal man named Ole Larson, and lives with him and his three sisters, Kristel, Sigrid and Valda. In addition to Ole emotionally, mentally and physically abusing Tammi, it is strongly implied that he is having an incestuous relationship with Kristel, who later disappears, and possibly with Sigrid and Valda as well.

After Ole is killed in a fire, Tammi and the two remaining girls move into town, where Tammi gets a job as a housekeeper, and, after getting advice from a “friend”, decides to try to make Daniel jealous.
Tammi does this by using the fact that Aaron Ramsey, a friend of her employers, is hot for her. This backfires as Daniel begins a sexual relationship with Helen Mattson, a rather loose woman. Tammi and Daniel’s relationship is on/off until Aaron tries to rape Tammi. Daniel saves her, then rapes her himself. Wonderful guy.

Aaron later kidnaps Tammi, who is rescued by Daniel. Kristel returns-she says she got lost and went to live with an Indian tribe-and Tammi and Daniel eventually decide that they, in fact, love each other.

Upside: I finished the book.

Downside: As is the case with Ms. Pelton’s earlier work which I reviewed, there is NOTHING good here. The characters are flat and uninteresting, the storylines-such as they are-go from misognystic to stupid, storylines are introduced and never fleshed out.

Sex: There are love scenes in the book, but they are so mild that they are almost non-existent.

Violence: In addition to the rape scenes, Tammi is physically abused on a few occasions. Daniel beats up Aaron and shoots at his horse to cause it to fall on him, killing Aaron.

Bottom Line: “Awaken, Savage Heart” is garbage from beginning to end.
