I'm all for handmade gifts and custom-made items for a specific recipient, but this is uh... really special. Not to say there aren't some cute ideas in here, although it is all text and I have never seen a book of gifts without photos before, especially for one's handmade creations. As I browsed the table of contents, I see some things here that aren't for everyone. Ah! A jar of Bible promises. I guess, for the right person. I know a lot of Christians, but I can't think of any off the top of my head for whom I would present with such a thing. "You really shouldn't have" comes to mind -- after all, aren't they already in the Bible, which presumably a Christian is already reading? But I guess. Maybe.
My personal favorite is the catalogs. Yes, that's right. Give your loved one a catalog and call it a "Wish Book"! What a great idea, right? Oh no, so I'm reading the titles here... "How to Buy a Home with a Low Down Payment; Qualifying for a mortgage." Really, Alice? First of all, this isn't a catalog, and secondly... it is also not a gift! "Walking for Exercise and Pleasure." And golly, who wouldn't want an L.L. Bean catalog for Christmas, am I right? Somehow I doubt Alice is going to include a gift certificate with it, though. Here's a really cheerful one that she suggested -- Being an Executor; What an executor is and does to settle an estate. Merry Christmas! :-|
Also, hang on to your hats, folks, this one is really creative: a highlighted phone book! Really! "Thanks, honey, just what I always wanted! The Baltimore/ D.C. metro area directory! What? You mean there's MORE? You've highlighted every phone number we need in here and you've given it a nifty felt cover? Wow! You've really outdone yourself this year!"
Oh, lookie here, here's a great suggestion for a gift! "Dear so and so I know how you have wanted me to go to church and Sunday school with the family for a long time. I appreciate that you have not harped at me on Sunday mornings and just quietly taken the responsibility for our family's spiritual growth by yourself... As my gift to you, I will come to church for the next six weeks..." Nope, no agenda here!
From time to time I find myself wishing I lived next door to the author of a certain book because I think it would be great fun to have tea with them and discuss their ideas or marvel at their artwork... in this case I'm really glad I don't know Alice. I'm sure she's a lovely person, it's just... she is clearly not an expert on what makes a good gift and I have to wonder what the publishers were thinking here. Nevertheless, if this sort of thing strikes your fancy, get cracking now to see if you can find yourself a J.C. Penney's catalog for Uncle Ralph before everyone else snaps them up!
