The Story of Santa Claus

Rate this book
from the book jacket:

Christmas Eve is perhaps the most exciting night of the year, especially for children. And why? Because everyone is waiting for the arrival of Santa Claus.

Santa Claus has been with us for hundreds of years, but we have known him in many different ways. From his early days as St Nicholas, through the jolly elk known by Dutch settlers in New York, to the figure with his red coat, white beard and merry laugh we love so much today.

"The Story of Santa Claus" is a great book to read if you want a thorough history of the origins of Santa Claus and his legend. My Mom has a collection of the different Santa Clauses (or Santa-like figures) that are prominent in different countries. This book gave information on almost all of them, which gave the figurines even more meaning. Also, the pictures were amazing.

After a somewhat choppy start, this was enjoyable ... especially the illustrations.

Indexed but no bibliography. For pleasure reading, not a scholarly resource.
