The tag on the back of book rather succinctly summarizes this book: "Condemned! Young Renson Carlylean, a communications officer, thought he had it made when he landed a coveted promotion to the Starship Trigon, on its way to discover the fabled riches of the Cities of Zythin. Renson soon discovers that acceptance by shipboard personnel depends more upon his ability to conform to darker, more gruesome standards than his ready expertise in his job."
I was sore pressed to finish this book because, initially, the writing is awkward and somewhat amateurish. The first third of the book is setup for what follows though and, once the actual story gets moving it all improves quite nicely.
The next third of the book is where the real action occurs. The last third of the book resolves everything quite nicely and, in the end, you come away with a slightly above average sci-fi book. Much credit to the author who could have written some very gory and salacious descriptions of the "more gruesome standards" but who instead chose to use suggestion and subtext to fill in the blanks; the reader always knows what's going on without having it spelled out in vulgar terms.
