Richard Bass’s The Effective Anger Management Guide For Parents offers some practical insights, but overall, it left me feeling underwhelmed. Though the book is quite short in length, it felt like a very slow read—one that I found myself having to push through rather than being naturally pulled along by the content.

The biggest issue for me was how outdated the tone and strategies felt. Much of the advice seemed more suited for a parenting manual from the late 1980s or 1990s, lacking the relevance and nuance needed for today’s families navigating more complex emotional and social dynamics. Modern-day parenting challenges—like managing screen time, social media pressures, or evolving communication styles—aren’t addressed, which limits the book’s usefulness for current readers.

That said, there are some decent reminders about staying calm, setting consistent boundaries, and modeling emotional regulation for kids. But if you’re looking for a fresh, relatable, and up-to-date take on anger management in parenting, you might want to keep looking. This one feels more like a time capsule than a guidebook.

Honestly, this book is way more than an "anger management" book. It's packed with such deep wisdom, and I'm so glad I found it. I have a toddler and a little baby. And we want to raise our children with deep compassion.

The author goes into some beautiful territory. Very informative, but also very healing. How to empathize with our children is at the core of this parenting style. And it starts with having compassion on ourselves, and accepting our own feelings.

I just love this book. Read it, dig into it, and do the exercises. It will be so worth it, for you, your family, and your children's children.

Little too liberal for my taste

Has some good insights on what can cause anger in parents and how to help realign yourself when you're angry. Wraps up talking about the positive parenting style and basically discourages parents from disciplining their kids, not my cup 'o tea thanks. My kid needs a timer out or a spanking they're getting a time out or spanning.

Amazing!

Well-researched, cohesive, and extremely relevant. I honestly think every parent should read this book. I’m definitely applying these tips to my life as a parent.
