The story of Martin Cramme and his partner Dora as they come to terms with the economic and social conditions in post Second World War Germany, setting up their own textile businss and facing conflict within their families over the choices they have made.
Irina Korschunow was a German author of both children's book and adult literature. The daughter of a Russian father and a German mother, she became an outsider under the National Socialist regime. After World War II, she studied German, English and Theatre in Göttingen and Munich.
She won a number of awards both for her children's and young adult books as well as for the work aimed at an adult audience, which became less and less autobiographical over the course of her career.
Very good, but ultimately sad novel about two very likeable characters who achieve success in the economic miracle of post 2nd World War Germany but in doing so lose contact with each other and whose values are rejected by their son.
