The Romance of Words

Unlike some other reproductions of classic texts (1) We have not used OCR(Optical Character Recognition), as this leads to bad quality books with introduced typos. (2) In books where there are images such as portraits, maps, sketches etc We have endeavoured to keep the quality of these images, so they represent accurately the original artefact. Although occasionally there may be certain imperfections with these old texts, we feel they deserve to be made available for future generations to enjoy.

If you read it cover to cover it seems a dictionary. It is dry, and there is quite a bit of 'so what?' with the information provided because it is dated. Medieval weaponry, for example, is highly unlikely to be encountered in everyday life. The book, though, is absolutely priceless for a single chapter, Chapter 8: Metaphor. Weekley makes it clear to the reader that they had no idea what language is, and what it comprises. If you pick up this book and find the going tough, just read this chapter.

Fascinating.
A 'must read' for fans of Mark Forsyth's Etymologicon.
