The 1999 Arrabida Course was devoted to the legacy of one of the most influential thinkers of the last half century, Sir Isaiah Berlin, in its different dimensions: The critique of historic determinism, the analysis of the Enlightenment and the Romantic reaction against it, the reflection on the two concepts of liberty between liberalism and totalitarianism, the concept of pluralism and its (often overlooked) contrast with relativism.

Remembering and discussing Sir Isaiah’s intellectual legacy, one is remembering and discussing the political, moral and philosophical foundations of western democracies, as welll as the main central conflict which has oppposed them to totalitarianism throughtout the 20th century.

JOÃO CARLOS ESPADA é Director do Instituto de Estudos Políticos e coordenador da Licenciatura em Sociologia da Faculdade de Ciências Humanas da Universidade Católica Portuguesa. É também Professor Convidado de Ciência Política na Faculdade de Ciências Económicas e Empresariais daquela universidade e da Faculdade de Economia da Universidade Nova de Lisboa. Doutorado em Ciência Política pela Universidade de Oxford, foi professor visitante nas universidades de Brown, Stanford e Georgetown, nos EUA. Foi Presidente da Associação Portuguesa de Ciência Política (2002-2006) e consultor para os Assuntos Políticos do Presidente da República, Aníbal Cavaco Silva (2006-2011), depois de ter exercido funções semelhantes junto do Presidente Mário Soares (1986-1991).
