New York state towns, villages, and cities: A guide to genealogical sources
This essential guide will help historians and genealogists locate published and transcribed records for New York State's nearly 1700 municipalities. The tables in this book give information on each of New York's towns, villages, and the county in which it is located, the date of organization or incorporation, church and cemetery records and the repositories in which they are found, and other valuable information for the reader. There is also exciting new information on a little known source called "Town Clerk's Register of Men Who Served in the Civil War," that indicates whether those records survive for each town.

Most of the book is a chart that gives information on the town/city/village of your ancestor and if there is a published history; there is also an indication as to where you can find published or compiled records for churches and cemeteries. If you have an ancestor who fought in the Civil War from NY, there is a column that marks if the town has information on that individual. Also found that each town has a historian. You can google the list of historians. This was a really helpful resource for my NY state ancestors. Excited to start working on leads. Recommended.
