British Library Sidney, Philip; 1877. 3 plate; port. 19 cm. 11612.e.29.
Sir Philip Sidney was a remarkably gifted, versatile, and all-around brilliant person, and reading his Complete Poetical Works has been quite a ride, complicated by the archaic spellings preserved in the Cambridge UP edition. To my surprise, his renderings of dozens of biblical Psalms are among my favorites, whereas some portions of his sonnet cycles seem pretty dull. His output is prolific and diverse, the rhythms are rigorous and varied, the structures are often dramatic and evocative. Sidney is definitely one of English lit’s major giants. Recommended to anyone with the interest, time, and energy.
2/5 stars. Couldn’t enjoy more than a handful of these poems. The strong use of meter and rhyme is very compelling, and I don’t dispute the author’s technical ability, but the sheer number and repetitive nature of the poems wore me down eventually, and by the end I was reading it simply to get through and be done with it.
