Life on the beautiful island paradise of Kua-i-Helani is perfect and unchanging. Then one day the soldiers of the evil Fire Queen manage to steal the Water Shell that protects the island from the queen’s rage. The queen creates a flaming volcano that covers the island with burning lava, and a huge tidal wave carries the island people out to sea. Only the child Keiki survives-and it is up to her to overcome the power of the queen and restore the island’s beauty and tranquillity.
The illustrations are amazing and the story is wonderful. I love a good coming-of-age girl powered journey. Anyone who's a fan of Moana would love this story as well.
I really liked this book. The illustrations were amazing and the story is very interesting. The writing is so descriptive; I would definitely use this story when trying to get my students to write with more detail. It has amazing imagery: "Her snaking black hair coiled and twisted in smoking tangles." This would also be a good book to use for metaphors and similes.
