Children in the mines, 1840-42

Rate this book
More than 100 years ago it was common for parents to take their children to work with them so that money earned might help to buy food and clothing. Conditions were so bad the government (in Wales) decided to find out the facts and so between 1840 and 1842 two government Inspectors spoke to the children who worked in the mines. During each visit they took brief notes. This book deals with the evidence given by children under the age of eleven years.

I read this book as a child and I have never forgotten these harrowing stories from the children of the Welsh mines, who lived more than a century ago. It was the same in mines all over the UK.
In those days it was normal for parents to take their children to work with them.
The stories in this book were collected from children under the age of eleven years.
Accidents were common and some of the children were as young as six or seven. They didn’t go to school and often had to work in near darkness.
I wish all children today could read this book in their history lessons, it is hard to believe that the stories come from only 150 years ago.
