While this novel seemed to have a number of promising elements, I felt that they seemed jumbled together, the focus of the story juggled this way and that to different characters and plotlines, without a clear narrative thread linking them together. For instance, though a large chunk of the narrative follows Mary, she never does play a real role in the plot, except to serve as the Easterner through whose eyes we are shown the West. There are a few interesting descriptions of scenes and people, some moments of humor (the antagonism between Mrs. Yellett and Leander, for instance). For a few chapters of tense tragedy near the climax, and the bittersweet ending, Manning manages to concentrate and stick to the point, but for much of the time I kept waiting for all the different elements to click together cohesively and it didn't happen.
