His goal lies 6,000 miles away - and deep within his own soul. The chance discovery of his journals, buried on a Colombian cliff above the sea, uncovers a mystery which took many years to finally solve. His journals tell of misery and elation, of triumph and failure, of insight and insanity.Does the man make the journey, or does the journey make the man?Follow the tiny kayak, and follow the mind of a young man set on a goal that no amount of torture can dissuade him from reaching, on a journey that brings him face to face with himself.
This novel is written as if it’s a true story, drawn from a found journal. As such, it reads like an intimate diary, and there are few indications where fiction (or interpretation of the journal) strays from supposed fact. However, the story simply does not ring true to me, which it should as a novel mimicking truth. Oddly, an internet search of the unseen main character — the writer of the journal — strongly suggests a real person with the same name has a similar claim to having actually done this kayak journey. A prominent person familiar with the story claims it is bunk. Extraordinarily odd.
If you love Coach, you’ll love this book. Even if his stories are over embellished a bit, the fact that he was able to complete this journey is an impressive feat.
Great way to bring a sole voyage on kayak from Southern CA to Columbia. Taken from the personnal journals. Wanted to keep reading to see if the solo kayaker makes it or not and to see the eventual outcome
