Jamaica White: The White Witch of Rose Hall was actually first published in 1968, although I don't remember which cover it had. (I also find versions of the same title by "Hal" Underhill.) Rose Hall Plantation is a real place near Montego Bay in Jamaica. My parents bought a copy of this book for me when they they visited / toured Rose Hall in December, 1973. I was probably too young to read this at the time, but I wasn't going to say anything to my parents! The main character of the book was despicable and did awful things for her personal gain. The story is based on what was believed to be (partly) true events. Over the years, researchers of Rose Hall have submitted that the main character attributed to Rose Hall may have been confused with another person somewhere else. Anyway, back in 1973 the tour emphasized that the Plantation was haunted by the ghost of the White Witch of Rose Hall.
It was good, although the end seemed rushed and the writing wasn't clear at times. Overall I enjoyed it and learned a few things about Jamaican history, culture as well.
