Babysitting - why did this one make me want to cry a little?

“Sometimes others aren’t able to see. The things we might do and the things we might be. And that’s why you mustn’t go measuring YOU. By what OTHERS think and by what OTHERS do.”

This is a book designed to inspire. Why else would it have such a bold, eye-catching cover? It’s inspiring. Then there are the pictures on the cover, of a beautiful looking flower with, and this part is impossible to miss, the dodo of the title. There she is, possibly having landed with a splat, smiling on this flower, complete with her flying hat and goggles so we at least know how she got there – clearly, she was trying to fly. With the cover of Catherine Emmett and Claire Powell’s The Dodo Who Dreamed She Could Fly, sharing so much we can be sure not only is this book going to be one we are all going to love but also that it is going to be fun from start to finish!

Delilah is the delightfully named dodo of the story and she’s on a mission, to be the very first dodo to fly. It’s very much a dream, she doesn’t like to talk about it in case the others laugh at her for being so very daft. Why is it daft? In case you don’t know there has never been a flying dodo. Can Delilah be the one to change that? Let us pay her a visit her small island a long, long way away. There are flowers and the sun shines all day long, but Delilah doesn’t see them, she just looks to the sky, oh and she reads, all about aerodynamics and flight, learning all she needs to help her take flight for herself. Despite all her efforts all that happens is laughter from the other dodos. Luckily for Delilah her dad believes in her and gives her one of the most important messages that a parent could share with a child. Don’t measure you by what others think and do.
