Joan Miró, the “International Catalan,” was influenced from an early age by the avant-garde movements that spread across Europe during the first half of the twentieth century. In these movements he found confirmation of what he sought – “to kill painting” in order to reinvigorate it. This was his spiritual crusade, an enterprise of knowledge and a fight against laziness of mind. In his paintings – with their bursts of pure color and their world of immediately recognizable figures – and in his sculpture and prints, a single intention is to make the interaction of the real and the imaginary worlds immediately perceptible and to reflect the shock of this confrontation. Author Raillard, an eminent French writer, academic and critic, knew Miró personally. In conversations with this great artist, Raillard gained an insight into his motivations, beliefs and artistic development. The beautifully reproduced plates present here a full and fascinating introduction to the span of Miró’s art. A native of Barcelona, Miró died in 1983 on Christmas Day in Palma, Majorca.
