I read this as a shared reading with a kindergarten student. We used it to practice expressive reading- how do we say a question versus a statement with an exclamation point versus a sentence with a period. The student enjoyed the illustrations, but the words were quite difficult and ranged. The repetition was helpful, but did not occur throughout the entire book. There did not seem to be much of a plot or a story, and it was difficult to make predictions based off of the text. When the student tried to make predictions, she was not able. I would not use this again for a kindergarten student, even though it was recommended for students age 4-8, I think a second or third grader would have more luck with this book. I'm still not sure if I would recommend it, although my student gave it eleven stars (out of five).
"What If" is a children's book that certainly gets readers laughing and is more of a silly book, rather than a concept book. It does introduce animals, which I think is great, but what I really like is that books' goal is to see how hard it can make children laugh. I also liked how to gave children the opportunity to open their imagination, and possibly really think about the "what if's" in life. I think this is a great book to get children laughing and let them have fun.
