This play combines elements from Greek mythology and the history and drama of classical Greece. The king of Athens gives his daughter Procne in marriage to the king of Thrace. Her sister Philomele sets out to find her but is seduced by Tereus who silences her by cutting out her tongue.
If this was just the first play, ‘The Love of the Nightingale’ it would easily be a four (maybe even five) star read but the inclusion of the second play ‘The Grace of Mary Traverse’ pulled this book down a star in rating.
Yet I would certainly recommend the first play, though feel like I must say it deals with subjects such as violence to women and rape.
If that doesn’t set off any triggers for you then this is a great play to read and I’d love to get the chance to watch it.
