The astronaut who landed on the moon in November 1969 and also lived and worked in Skylab in 1973 tells about his past and present life, which is devoted to painting scenes from the American experience in space.
The fourth man to walk on the Moon, Alan Bean was an American naval officer and naval aviator, aeronautical engineer, test pilot, an artist. After serving as Lunar Module Pilot on Apollo 12, he served as commander of the 1973 Skylab 3 mission. He retired from NASA in 1981 to pursue a career as a full-time artist and public speaker. The last surviving member of the Apollo 12 crew, he passed away in 2018 at the age of 86.
It was only after I'd read a few pages I realised this was intended for children. There were a lot of things I'd have liked to know more about from Alan Bean's perspective and I felt the actual space missions were moved through very quickly. However, aware than I'm not the target audience... Although co-written, Bean's voice (and smile!) was clear from the start. Lovely that some of his art is included.
