There are plenty of good non-fiction horse books for kids. This is not one of them. This is crap. There is very little specifically about the palomino. Most of it could apply to horses and ponies in general. The sentences are short and drag. This writer might have worked with racehorses, but doesn't know how to write. Her text is as dead as one of her broken down Thoroughbreds.

It would've been nice to have photos showing the many different shades of palominos, which range from incredibly pale pinkish peach to milk chocolate. It would've been nice to learn more about famous palominos, instead of just a passing reference to Trigger. How about the requirements for a horse registered with the Palomino Horse Breeders Association?

Believe it or not, even eight year old kids really into horses want to know as much as they can. I was reading The Encyclopedia of the Horse at that age. Kids are much smarter than this author and publisher think they are.

Well, its an older book for 2017, but I imagine for its time when it came out it provided a wealth of information for children. Now, I can see it being too boring for students or young children. It provides a great layout of non-fiction text features and provides accurate information, but does not seem to be an intriguing read. I am guessing for young kids who enjoy horses would find this book marvelous.

Our youngest is horse-crazy, so she borrowed this book as well as Shetland Ponies and Thoroughbred Horses, all by the same author, from her elementary school library. As with the other books we've read in this series (Pinto Horses and Arabian Horses), we've discovered that they contain the same chapters and much of the same information. Still, we enjoyed looking at the pictures and our girls love how beautiful these animals are. We brought our girls to some stables to ride and learn about how to care for horses this past weekend and much of the information in these books was reiterated there. We plan to sign them up for riding lessons and I expect we'll be in a horse-crazy phase for some time to come.

Feb 2012 update: Our youngest has borrowed this book a couple of times.

A very cute fact filled book about Palomino horses. Lots of pictures so my 6 year old enjoyed it.
