Favorite parts of the book were the descriptions of people in the Bible - David, Solomon, Joseph, Abigail. The author explains that David had "unsurpassed devotion" to God, however he never learned how to deal with emotion in family relationships. The author uses scripture to support his character descriptions and then goes on to explore dysfunctional families and codependency. The biblical examination was fascinating to me and I couldn't put the book down. Part II was called "shackled by shame" and I learned so much about what is healthy and what is toxic shame and what happens to us as a result of shame. Overall a great book, my rating is tainted by the latter third of the book that goes into some case studies of people in therapy. I started to skim. I think there are nuggets of knowledge in this section of the book as well, but I have difficulty reading about a person that connects with their "inner child" and there is a breakthrough and then it almost sounds like they are healed. The writing is focused on the breakthrough and isn't that just the beginning? So then what happens - well, they go on for more therapy. Okay,I am not sure I understand therapy enough so does anything ever get resolved? Doesn't seem so to me and I am unsatisfied.
