Preparing Your Child for Academic Success is a self-help guide for parents, written by former sensory development tutor, Terri Hadley. Covering eight chapters, the book aims to provide parents with all the needed tools and advice to help raise their children in a supportive, healthy, environment. Each chapter covers a specific age range, from under a year, to elementary and adolescence. Despite the book's title, the focus of Preparing Your Child for Academic Success is less about specific educational devices to improve intelligence or mental ability, and more about setting good foundations for academic prosperity.

Hadley's approach to writing is informed, with bullet-points used to indicate high-level pieces of takeaway content, nestled alongside paragraphs and key reference sections at the end of each chapter. While it is not for me to comment on the specifics of the guidance (I am not a behavioural development specialist), they way Hadley presents information comes across as well-placed and relevant. It is worth noting that as a guide there is a lack of illustration or imagery, outside of the puzzle piece line drawings used as header imagery for each chapter. This is a book better suited to readers who can focus on words and sentences, as opposed to needing visual stimulus to maintain engagement.

Coming in at 146 pages cover to cover, it is a manageable read over the course of one or two sittings, although whether the average reader would be looking to do that is another thing altogether. Given the very broad range of age ranges covered, Preparing Your Child for Academic Success lends itself better to readers who are at the very start of their parental journey, or ones with big enough bookshelves to make room for a long-standing title in their homes. It is probably better, therefore, to see this as a good introductory guide, a springboard to help readers launch themselves into other areas of self-discovery.

A good starting point for parents, highlighting the importance of foundational support in fostering academic success.

Preparing Your Child for Academic Success is a practical, approachable guide that emphasizes something many parents overlook: strong academic outcomes are built on consistent foundational support, not shortcuts or pressure.

Terri Hadley draws on her background in sensory development to structure the book by age range, making it especially useful for parents at the beginning of their journey. Rather than focusing narrowly on academics, the book prioritizes environment, routine, and readiness elements that quietly shape confidence, independence, and long-term learning habits.

The writing is clear and well organized, using bullet points and summaries to highlight key takeaways. This is less a visual guide and more a thoughtful, text-driven reference parents can return to over time. Best suited as an introductory resource, it works well as a starting point for families looking to better understand how early support influences later academic success.

A solid, grounding guide for parents who want to be intentional about learning from the very start.
