Hugh Logan and the other human cores of the expeditionary force are back home, but the cost of keeping their allies alive has been a heavy one.
Not happy about losing their prey, the Ssath continue to use the vast resources at their disposal to seek total victory over humanity. They will stop at nothing until Earth’s cores are defeated and the planet is transformed into a feeding ground and hunting preserve.
Hugh and the other cores must prepare. The enemy is closing in, and the next battle will be fought here on Earth. They’ll need every soldier, every mech, and every ally they can gather if humanity is to survive.
A wonderful installment in the series and a very fun read. The epilogue left on a huge cliffhanger, which to me is a bit of a downside, it feels too 90's sitcom or Saturday morning cartoon, and I feel a proper wrap up and ending would have been more appropriate and appealing and felt better. Giving Robert Wagner a proper send off did however feel great.
The major downside to the book, besides the cliffhanger, was Hugh's level is just so low, and most of his fun tricks are consumable, so we don't really see him increase in power in any sort of meaningful way. I understand that ultimately this IS a dungeoncore novel but it's also fairly in the litrpg genre as well, and the lack of that power fantasy feels really bad. There's only so many times I can read about the 75mm being upgraded to the 90mm that feels fun, now it's a bit meh. He's a hero, he wins the unwinnable situations, his species gets the short straw everytime, there has to be a balancing act to it. He's currently level 3, honestly he should be 5 or 6 by now, and the upgrades should feel a heck of a lot better. He got a level 10 upgrade and never got to use it... Like... How hard would it be to just be a flat upgrade from 0 that increases each level? I feel like the mechanics haven't been well thought out. Additionally every alien species has some major advantage, often several, as a species, over humanity. All the humans get are ranged weapons and better air mech pilot's? Meh. Many different routes that could have been taken here, humanity's intelligence boosting upgrade speeds and power, many their social ability giving tons of diplomatic options and cheaper mercs, or maybe that technology itself advances quickly and in leaps and bounds. Lots of options to explore.
I look forward to the next sequel and sincerely hope it doesn't take as long to come out, I am thankful for the recap as it's been awhile since I read the last book.
A great addition to the series! Good action and good writing. A good number of stat screens although there’s a bit less focus on the individual numbers when the combatants are in huge groups (which is understandable). Hopefully there are more great installments after this because this was fun.
