Can she learn to play before her fate is decided for her?
This series includes found family, fated mates, violence, and adult content.
I liked this book a lot more than I thought I would when I started it! The beginning is a bit slow, with the requisite world building, character introductions, etc. but it really picked up after a few chapters. The world that Taylor builds is fairly simple for readers to understand, but complex enough that there's nuances that Ayanna, the main character, has to pick up on as she goes along. I'm a sucker for fantasy like this where the main character's whole life is turned around and they have to pick up on things quickly as they go along, so it's no surprise that I ended up loving this.
The main things I didn't like were that we don't really get context for the prologue in this book, although I can definitely see that we will in the following books in the trilogy. I wasn't the biggest fan of Reigal as a love interest. Partially because we know that he's hiding things from Ayanna, but also because he really doesn't treat her as well as I thought he should. There's also the hints that he might not be her endgame. I'd love to see how things go with Killian, I like him as a more morally grey character and for the fact that he tried to warn Ayanna against potential future problems. I fee like he's looking out for her more so than Reigal.
Anyways, I gave this 4 stars because, as I said, I did really like the storyline, I thought it was well-written, and I'm interested in seeing where this goes for the rest of the series but it did fall short of my bar for a 5-star rating. I received an ARC of this book, and I'm glad that I had this opportunity to discover a new author! Can't wait to read more from Ashton Taylor in the future.
I just … wow. I can’t even … This book ; i felt thrusted into this world. And it took my breath away. The FMC is just amazingly strong and stubborn and i love it. The dynamic was thrilling. I loved every second and cannot wait to come back to this world with the rest of the trilogy. Completely other worldly in the best way !
This book had everything I could've asked for. A fierce & resilient FMC, creative world building, plot, excellent spice, a swoon worthy love interest, found family, touch her & unalive, mystery, betrayal...Awakened has it all!
We follow FMC Ayanna who lives in a world left to humans after the Great War. Constantly fighting to survive against brutal attacks from Obrumbratio, she is desperate to do everything she can to protect her loved ones and the village she calls home.
After a strange encounter with a pack of Obrumbratio, she is left feeling off. Lucky for her, she is noticed by Reigal who recognizes what is happening to her and is able to help. Limited on options and eager to learn more about the fiery haired woman he rescued, Reigal whisks her away to his realm to find answers. The plot thickens as those answers are revealed and Ayanna continues to adapt to each new revelation thrown at her. She fights to harness her power and gain understanding over the world she's been thrust into and the political dynamics it seems that everyone but her can seamlessly navigate.
Overall, I can't say enough good things. I was enraptured by the world that was built and the heart wrenching story she wove for Ayanna. 10/10 recommend dropping everything to read this today!
So I was pleasantly surprised by this story! I was intrigued by the synopsis but wasn’t sure what to expect when I first began reading. As with any first book in a series it takes a while to establish the characters, plot, and world-building which can seem a little slow going at first, but trust me when I say the story picks up in the best possible way after a few chapters.
I was absorbed by Ashton’s world-building! It is a refreshing system built on characters we have all encountered frequently in fantasy and I love how its all portrayed in this story. The magical abilities, shapeshifting, and elemental magic have their own unique methods and I appreciate that the author introduces a wide variety of mythological and magical beings in her own distinctive way. I can’t wait to learn more about the various realms and political systems.
There are a plethora of characters we are introduced to right from the start and can be a little confusing to keep track. I love our FMC Ayanna and the fact that she’s a badass with a sassy vocabulary and awesome with a bow. Regial, our MMC, I’m still trying to figure out my feelings toward but I alternate between love and skepticism. I feel Killian will end up being my favorite as I love a good morally grey character. I wish we got more depth from some of the characters like Desmond, Maeve, and Athena but I’m hoping there’s still more to come.
I really appreciated the pacing of the romance/spice in this story. Sometimes we get too much where it can take away from the plot or not enough where it can leave the romance lacking. That is not the case at all here! Ashton does a great job with the attraction between the two MCs and delivering on the action while keeping the story and plot going with ease. Thank you for this!
Overall I very much enjoyed this book and was gripped by the plot/storyline. For a debut book this was hitting the mark! The only things I would remark upon are that I wish the ending of the book was a little longer. There is a lot of action that took place in the last few chapters and I felt it was a little rushed and could’ve been paced out better. Additionally, with all the characters we meet I didn’t feel as much of a connection with some as I would’ve liked. However, none of these things took away from the storyline.
Thank you so much Ashton Taylor for allowing me to participate in reading an ARC and enjoying this story! This series has so much potential and I cannot wait to see where you take it. (Side Note: I did NOT see the villain coming in the end and I’m mad about it 😂!)
Firstly can we just appreciate the fact it comes with a map and character/location pronunciations. I love these small details that I find always get over looked or not thought about.
This is the book I've been looking for to fill my fantasy void after finishing ACOTAR, it has shifters, vampires, Fae and the main character is a bad ass who has a mind of her own. I love it!
The world building gripped me from the beginning and continued to build as we progressed through the plot. The first few chapters of this introduced the natural world enemy as well as gave us some back story to the main character Ayanna.
The main love interest is a dream! The perfect amount of sweet, domineering and protective. His and Ayanna's interactions are sweet, funny and tension filled! You can feel the chemistry building between them.
Then enter the 'villain' or the person that everyone sees as bad but I instantly fell in love with. (I no I'm the typical 'i can change him' girl) his witty and there's just something about him I feel we will see develop more within the second/third book.
I have to say the story really did grip me and made me feel all kinds of emotions for the characters involved. I'm not ashamed to say it had me crying at some bits!
Spice within is saucy! And Reigal can talk the talk! Ashton managed to place the spice in nicely and kept it fresh by adding new ideas that I have never read before and my lord did I love the idea of it!
Defo recommend this to anyone looking for a new fantasy trilogy. Although I must warn you it ends on a cliff hanger! And one I'm not too happy about! (For personal reasons) But it makes me highly appreciate the next book! Cannot wait to get my hands on that too!
This series includes found family, fated mates, violence, and adult content.
Imagine A Court of Thorns and Roses (SJM’s ACOTAR) and Game of Thrones (GoT) got together and had a book baby! It’s that freaking good! I don’t want to put it down.
The big screen rarely does a book justice when it’s adapted into a movie but I could easily see this being one of those movies that fantasy lovers watch over and over…but also in my case, I will read over and over!
In Chapter 1, right away, are two of my favorite quotes from this book…
“Your family doesn’t end in blood, Ayanna. Nor does it start there.”
Just reading this line gives me goosebumps. Knowing what I know at this point in the story…the person that says this line, it holds so much more than the words alone! There’s a depth to this comment that Ayanna can’t begin to understand until it’s too late.
The other quote:
“Sometimes, the best things in life were on the other side of fear”.
Ayanna’s journey has only just begun and she won’t even begin to understand the fear she will have to learn to stand and fight against, run from, or be consumed by it.
Awakened is an Epic Fantasy about a girl raised in the human realm but is anything but human…or ordinary. She’s taken over the duty of village protector that used to fall on her father. Since his death she’s felt obligated to make sure no one suffers the same fate from the Obrumbratio (creatures of the night).
Here are some of the tropes you’ll encounter in this book: * Magic * Court Intrigue * Touch her and die * Fated Mates * Spice * Wings
This book was a complete surprise, and I think it has the potential to become one of my new favorites.
As with many first books in a fantasy series, it started off super slow for me. I personally always have trouble envisioning new worlds in fantasy series, but the world building in this one was done really well. I did feel like I had to continually reread pages to get all of the realms, character names, and creatures straight. The world building in fantasy novels can be overwhelming, but Ashton Taylor gives it to us in little bits and pieces, which helps to keep everything straight. Throughout the whole book, I felt like we were discovering this world along with our main character, Ayanna.
The main characters in the story were extremely well written. I felt a connection to Ayanna and enjoyed how she dealt with the many situations she finds herself in. She isn’t perfect and makes mistakes, but you just can’t help feeling for her and wanting things to work out.
Parts of the story are a bit predictable, but there are still several twists and turns to keep us readers surprised.
There are so many different creatures mentioned in this book that we just get a glimpse of. I am hoping to find out more about them in the next books in the series. I think this was a great start to what could be a great new fantasy series to rival some of the best out there. For a debut in the series, I give it a solid 4.5 stars! I can’t wait to read the next one!
I liked it more than i was thinking i would! It starts slowly, but then it picked up and got me hooked. I know that i NEED to read the second book as soon as it will come out because i need more of this story. And more of our morally grey character - Killian :) Like we all know he kills people, but does it stop us from loving him? no. I can't wait to see him more!
Our main character, Ayanna, was very good written and likeable. She ist strong, stubborn and will do everything for her beloved ones - i love it!
"Fuck that. I don't cower; nor will i run"
Our love interest, Reigal, i liked him at first. I really hoped that he will end up as an endgame but after reading the whole book i am not so sure anymore. AND i started to think about all his red flags, his secrets and problems with controlling people and now i wish with all my heart that there will be a ACOTAR-situation where she ends up with another in the second book. Because he doesn't deserve Ayanna. But you know who does? Killian. He even told her she shouldn't trust everyone. like he CARES for her. Can't wait for more of him!
"You're a psychopath" "I prefer the term creative. Also, I don;t think you're supposed to tell psychopaths that they're... well, psychopaths. I've heard it tends to upset them"
So if you are looking for a new fantasy world to dive in, you should deifinitely check "Awakened" out - i loved it!
[#adpr] Thank you to Equality Book Tours and Ashton Taylor for an e-arc of this book in return for an honest review.
TROPES Touch and I’ll kill you Found family Chosen one Secret Powers Fated mates Dom MMC
OK! This book sounded amazing from the minute I saw the tropes - I am a sucker for “touch her and I’ll kill you” vibes. I will be completely honest and say I felt this book fell a bit flat at the beginning for me. I will wholly put this down to the mood I was in when in started to read this. I just didn’t love the first few chapters.
But… by about 30%, the book started to pick up, the paced picked up, connections were being established and the FMC was less annoying by this point. And boy did I fly through the rest of the book.
By the end of the story, I was hooked. Even as I write this review, I keep thinking I have more to read and want to get back to this world and then it hits me that I’ve finished and I have to wait for book two.
Reigal was HOT! We all know possessive controlling me in the real world are a no no… BUT, he was hot in this book and the author wrote the smut scenes so well. I also loved that it was dual POV so we got to learn more about Reigal and see the story from his perspective.
And…WTF WAS THAT ENDING!? Gimme book 2 like now :O
I would encourage you to pick this up if you love the above mentioned tropes, a badass FMC, a domineering MMC, dragons, magic and political intrigue.
Awakened is an action-packed, magical book that is pretty darn good!!
Awakened starts out slow, but intense. We get action at the very beginning, and from there it never stops, it just gets more intense. That’s why I was able to read it in one day, because I couldn’t put it down!
I really loved how we get to be witness to the growth of the young female main character, into a strong, powerful woman who has gained more power than she could ever believe. She is sassy, hot-headed, stubborn, and has a good sense of humour. She is a woman who has gone through trauma, adventure, physical and emotional growth, and still more trauma. But she is someone who will not give up; she is a fighter, a warrior; and more of course, but those are things we all have to explore on our own.
I also really loved all the other characters in Awakened. Some of them you want to punch in the face, but others you can’t help but falling in love with, HAHA!!
If you love fantasy, adventure, mythical beings, steamy/spicy romance, great world-building and character building, and a strong story, then Awakened is a book that you should definitely check out!!
I highly recommend Awakened, and I can’t wait until I can get my hands on the next book in the series once the lovely author has time to write it!! So excited!!!
Okay hear me out - were there moments where I asked myself what I was reading…. Yes. But did I strangely love it and binge read until 130 am and then finish the last 10% today because I had to be able to work… also yes!
This story was really fast paced, there wasn’t a bunch of in-depth world building that had you wondering where people were or made it hard to imagine the scenery, and I loved that. Sometimes you just need a story that is going to keep driving you forward.
The characters were easy to keep straight. I have some trust issues 😒 so idk how I feel about some of them - I do know who I am routing for though 🖤 👈🏻 he’s my type! IYKYK.
I just really enjoyed this story, there were times when I was questioning myself. Flipping and flipping in my head over how I felt about it BUT THEN THERE WAS THE ENDING!
The end sealed the deal for me. I am invested I. The characters and hooked by that cliff hanger that I will 💯 read the next book (and secretly hope for more of that darkness 😉)
The magic system and shifters were introduced in a cool way. I’m interest to see how the fae and vampires tie in more, and more about the fae by the lake. I can’t wait to learn more about the Great War and the dystopian vibe the humans have. I feel like there could be so many good things coming. (And the about the author had the best dad joke)
This book surprised me. At about 25% I wasn't sure if this book was for me, but I am so glad I kept reading because it really builds momentum from that point forward.
The world Taylor has built is very exciting, with shifters, dragons, creepy monsters, fae, vampires, intricate political systems, and mythology.
Both the FMC and MMC are incredibly broken. They are domineering, violent, hot tempered but also incredibly interesting. I initially really did not like the MMC Reigal, but as I learned more about him and his backstory he really grew on me. There is a fast burn romance and the way that they are both broken complements each other and their relationship.
The first half of the book had a lot of telling instead of showing, I think with some edits this book would be outstanding! But, this did improve throughout the book and I am sure going into book two this will be less of an issue. Book one ends on a cliff hanger and I can't wait to dive into book two.

This was a good beginning to a new series but it did start out rather slowly. There was good world and character building to help you understand how the world became as it was. This story was definitely more plot than steam and it ends on a Cliffhanger.
Ayanna is a huntress with a take no prisoners attitude. She is always lurking in the shadows to hunt and destroy the monsters that go bump in the night. Reigel is a Emissary who is on a mission from the King. When he cross paths with Ayanna there is something about her that prevents him leaving her alone. Reigel has decided to keep Ayanna close to him because she possess a great power that neither of them understand.
The more time Ayanna and Reigel spend together the more she learns a out who she really is as well as the past that has shaped and defined her destiny. The question remains, what will Ayanna do with this newfound knowledge and the amount of raw power that has been dormant for so long and has now Awakened and grows more unstable each day.
This a series that I am highly invested in. Firstoff, the worldbuilding is amazing. You get to learn about the world Novae Terrae and the Shifters Realm alongside the main protagonist.
The storyline is amazing! The Great War destroyed the world that we have know. You can compare it with The Walking Dead. Instead of zombies there are the Obrumbratio.
I love that the story includes so many species like Wolves, Fae, Basiliks. There is also hierarchy and political scheme in the shifter world. The main protagnost Ayanna and Reigal are both amazing strong characters. There are also romance and sexual tension between them.
I love all the side characters who you get to introduced to, throughout the story. Suspense, secrets and mysteries are present which makes the book even more intriguing.
I am sad that I can't read the second book yet, because I have to know what happens next after the big clifhanger.
I think this series has potential, as well as this new author. Leaving things on the cliffhanger that it did makes me hate and love the book all at the same time (only because I struggle with the waiting!). I wish that there had been a bit more character development and seeing relationships that were being built along the way. But I love Ayana, Maeve, and Athena as they are badass. I have a soft spot for Killian because I truly feel he has Ayana’s best interest in the forefront but wants her to see things herself. Reigal has a good heart but is a bit overbearing (for good reasons) at times. It is an interesting mystical world that I am ready to see as it develops further. Can’t wait to here see where the rest of this story goes from here. The only reason I give this 4 rather than 5 is because o think the story could have flowed a bit better as at times it felt choppy to me.
4.5 Stars. I was a beta reader for this book and I am so glad I was given that opportunity! I truly cannot believe this is Ashton's first book. When I started reading I was in a bit of a slump and didn't think I would be able to get into it but I instantly became hooked within the first two chapters. The mythical world while filled with various creatures we all know and love is still very different and intriguing. Their were moments where my heart was literally beating so fast I was pacing the room. I will say it is a 4 and not 5 only because I felt there was a little lag in the middle where the story dulled out a tad and then became rushed at about 3/4 of the way through to meet up with the end. But it did not deter me from reading and I will most definitely continue this series once the next books are available. If you are looking for your next indie read please go grab this one!!!
Wow where to begin! I found out about this book a few months back. I signed up to be an arc reader. I knew I would have a short turn around once the book was given to me. I’m a very quick reader so I didn’t doubt my ability to read this book before the deadline. I will say I got a little nervous when I first started this book. It does start a little slow but it’s because Ashton takes time to build this world for you to envision. Ashton allows you to feel and actually see the places that Ayanna comes across, lives in and so on. You can visualize them so well based off her ability to weave intricate pieces of these worlds together. The story picks up quickly after the first few chapters! Buckle up because once I got to that point, I didn’t put this book back down! I had this finished in a day! I’m excited to see what books 2 and 3 bring. What Ayanna’s destiny will be and how her storyline will play out. If you enjoyed Harry Potter, Hungry Games and Mortal Instruments- you will thoroughly enjoy this book!
Thank you to the author and Equality Book Tours for sending me a copy of this intriguing read with found family, magical elements and fated mates.
Ayanna was a strong and fierce character who got more fierce as the truth about her family was revealed. She protected her village from the sinister creatures that attack and ravage humans. She was suddenly thrust into a whole new world with newfound powers and she took it in stride and never backed down.
Reigal rubbed me the wrong way from the beginning…It was a feeling. As we learn about his past and his upbringing, we understand the reasoning behind some of his actions. The guy clearly needs therapy and is not a great role model for anyone. The ending cemented my bad feeling as a good judgement call.
There were many incidents that went unexplained, many questions unanswered. There are too many mysteries surrounding the kingdom and I’m looking forward to Ayanna figuring them all out and ending up a successor. I hope she doesn’t get blinded by love and keeps being the awesome strong character she is!!
I’m excited for the sequel since there are so many questions I need answers to!
Awakened, part one of the Trinity Trilogy by Ashton Taylor starts with a prologue that makes it immediately impossible to put the book down. This book has everything I am looking for in a novel: adventure, supernatural beings, romance,…It introduces us to Ayanna, a human huntress who is set on protecting her village from the creatures that live in the dark. I have greatly appreciated this strong woman and her interactions with the other characters, especially Reigal. I also loved the worldbuilding, the beings that inhabit it, and way in which the story is driven by the plot and the engaging style of this author. Furthermore, I loved that the book starts out with a pronunciation list for the different names. I always struggle with figuring out how to pronounce names in fantasy novels. Don't forget to check out the content warnings at the beginning of the book.
Okay, so this was my first time reading anything by Ashton Taylor, and I have to say I really enjoyed it!!! Ayanna, one of two POV characters, is a spirited young woman who bears the responsibility of being one of three hunters who keeps their small village in food. Her life is simple, at least until a man named Reigal whisks her away from the life she’s always known once it is discovered she is actually a dragon shifter. Reigal is the other POV character, and I really enjoyed his POV as well!!! Reigal was growly, dominant, and extremely protective of Ayanna, which I could definitely appreciate. And Ayanna! I thought she was snarky, sassy, and fearless, all admirable traits in a book heroine. As for that cliffhanger of an ending… I’m dying to see what happens next!!!
I loved this story!!! The FMC is a strong badass who will do anything to protect those she loves and protect those considered weak. There's plenty of witty banter, smex tension, fighting, intrigue and world building.
"F*ck that. I don't cower; not will I run."
"You're so delightfully violent. I think I like it."
"Let's go be stupid," I mumbled. I haf done more foolish things before. I was sure of it. But at the moment, I was having a hard time recalling any."
For a debut novel, this story has a lot of potential. I enjoyed reading about the FMC learning how to use her powers. The concept of the creatures known as Obrumbratio are interesting and I have so many questions about them now that I finished the book! I really liked Killian as a character and have a good feeling about the role he will play in the coming books. Don’t get me started on that twist of an ending. I was shocked and also saddened by what happened. I can’t wait to follow the main character's journey as she tries to learn the world she is in and grow into her powers.
I'm glad I read this with a group! The beginning is kinda slow and very ACOTAR. But if you hang until 50% you won't be able to put it down after that!! The last half is so fast paced and exciting! I even felt like the writing is tighter the last half! Anyanna is our bada$$, strong, and sassy FMC! I like that she doesn't let a lot of people in but those she does let in she protects with her life! I have definitely picked a favorite MMC and it's definitely ACOTAR themed! I can't wait to read the next book!!! I'm so ready for it!
What can I say about this book? Other than how much I love it! The main female character is sassy, badA$$ and takes care if the ones she loves as she learns how to make her way in a world she never believed that she was apart of. The main male character is a lot to take in and as you learn about his past and how his feelings are toward the FMC! I can't wait for the next books to find out what happens!! Great job!!
Damn what a ride. I don't think I was actually ready for the trip this book took me. There were such devastating twists that I was just wholly unprepared for but I love every single f*cking second of it. I devour this book in less than two days and I'm already looking for book two to satisfy my addiction. This was well written, character driver, plot-heavy and delicious to read. Oh and the SPICE! A-1 truly. I don't want more I NEED MORE!
This book gripped me and pulled me in straight away. I cannot wait to read the next one and get more drawn into this world. With new realms, vampires, fae, wolves, dragons and all sorts of shifters I can wait to see what comes next. This is a fast paced read, it made me laugh and cry. There were moments I was absolutely devastated and others where I laughed out loud. And for those who have read it, I’m team Killian!

I had a hard time getting into this book, but when it did turn around for me, I knew I was reading something so great that I couldn't stop reading until I finished it in one sitting. This was one of my top 10 reads of 2022. I'm excited to see what happens in the second book.
Below is information dump from me and it contains spoilers from the book!
•Really good use of their powers such as Ayanna's power darkness. I know it’s used often but the way she used it is unique. •I loved that Killian and Ayanna are equals in having the same power. •I loved loved loved fight scenes. •In some parts, world building was quite heavy it turned into information dump •Reigal is sus
First, I love that in the beginning of this book there is a pronunciation catalog. Second, I would have finished this book in a day if I didn’t have two very small children. Third, I only rated 6 books this year with 5 stars. This book was amazing. It had all the things! The writing was impeccable. The world building was so immersive. You instantly fall in love with the characters and you are rooting for the FMC from page one! I am a person who usually guessing plot twists pretty well and I had NO idea about this plot twist! Very well done! I CANNOT wait for second book!!
I absolutely loved this! I honestly went into it a little closed minded because all I read is typical fantasy books and they always end the same. I was so surprised to find this different and I’m honestly on pins and needles waiting for the next book. Ayanna and Reigal had my laughing and crying. I just want more of them so much!
