OSS veteran Roger Hall gives us the story of another, fictional, OSS veteran. It's 1970, and Hall's fictional counterpart is, like himself, presenting himself as an author while writing precious few actual books. Unlike himself (I assume), that fictional counterpart is part of a secret society of OSS vets who are busy kicking the Communists down where the official agencies have failed to. It's a sort of Scarlet Pimpernel's network of old-timers, and it seems the CIA is now after them.
If you're in the mood for a light (but not exactly comedic) bit of espionage fluff, you should enjoy this one. If you're looking for something with a good deal more meat (and a great deal of belly laughs), read Hall's non-fiction work, his memoir of the OSS: You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger .
I really wish I could have written to or met Roger Hall. He seems like a really funny, interesting guy.
19 is an interesting book. The end of the first chapter sucked me in completely, but unfortunately the book kind of falls a little flat after that. There are some really good passages of writing, and Hall writes with such joy and verve (I guess?) - the humour is just part of his style. So it's fun to read.
Its really disappointing that 19 didn't become a series, because the concept of the secret society is so good, and the characters are all so interesting. It would make for a great movie or new book series.
Worth a read if you're very into this kind of story, but otherwise definitely prioritise 'You're Stepping on My Cloak and Dagger' which is a terrific read.
