I am fortunate enough to have an original 1917 leather-bound copy of this large volume, and not this reprint. By the way, its title is 'Sir Douglas Haig's Great Push' and not' Sir Douglas Haig OS'!
It is an extraordinmary work coming as it does from the Great War itself. Although it is partisan and partial, although it minimises British losses and maximises the meagre gains, it is suffused with photographs of the time, most if not all taken from the contemporary film of the battle made by Mallins and shown to millions across the UK. As such it is an invaluable record and a must read for all interested in this bloody battle. Four stars because of its partisan nature, but it is really a five star book overall, and a great insight into how the battle was perceived and portayed at the time it was fought
