Patchogue is a unique and fascinating history. Over 200 photographs bring to life the people, places, and events that defined the town from 1840 to 1920, and show us life as it really was during this colorful period. From the earliest days of photography, Patchogue was blessed with a large number of active photographers. Between them, they produced hundreds of postcards of the area, many of which are included in this collection. The images collected here show the thriving fishing and oyster industries in the mid-nineteenth century, and the boat-building industry that also flourished during this era. Patchogue vividly recalls the arrival of the railroad along the south shore in 1869 and the subsequent arrival of the first weekend travelers from New York City. We see the hotels that sprang up in Patchogue during this period and meet the holiday-makers who flocked to his popular resort during the late nineteenth century.
